Can You Get the Flu from the Flu Shot?

Nobody wants to have the flu. It takes a physical, mental, and emotional toll on the sufferer, not to mention it can spread to your loved ones. The development of the flu vaccine has saved many lives around the world. In the United States, the seasonal flu vaccine saves tens of thousands of lives and reduces hospitalizations associated with the flu virus.

It’s a wonder why there are still some people who either refuse to get the flu shot or have reservations about it. One of the most persistent myths about the flu shot is that you can get the flu from the flu shot. This is absolutely not true!

Misconceptions About the Flu Vaccine

The flu shot is created in two ways, either by using an inactivated virus, meaning it is no longer infectious or by using a single gene virus that elicits an immunological response in a patient. The flu shot has no power to transmit infection in people who are vaccinated. It is simply not possible because the vaccine does not contain an active virus capable of causing the flu.

One reason why some people think that the flu shot causes the flu is because of the short period of time between when you get the flu shot and when you are fully protected. It takes about 2 weeks before the flu shot goes into full effect, and you are protected from the flu virus. During this time period, if you get exposed to the flu, it is possible for you to get sick. This is why getting the flu shot as early as possible is important.

Another reason why some people think the flu shot causes the flu is if they develop sickness symptoms that are similar to that of the flu. While the flu is a commonly spoken about the condition during the winter, it is not the only illness possible. There is an overlap between the symptoms of a cold, allergies, and the flu. When you get the flu shot, you protect yourself from a serious illness but that doesn’t mean you won’t get a cold or allergies. If you have a runny nose, coughing, congestion, or body aches, it doesn’t necessarily mean the flu is to blame. You could have a cold or other sicknesses.
